Till now Private Equity (Unlisted) Shares were mostly available for wealthy rich investors. However, recently and especially in India the door are now open for retail investors as well.
Private companies are those which are not listed on the stock changes, be it in India or any other country. Private Equity (Unlisted) shares are the shares of companies which are not public as of now. One will hear about Private Equity investments as investments in Unlisted Shares.
Unlisted Equity Shares are the shares of companies which are not yet listed on any stock exchange (NSE & BSE) or have been delisted from the stock exchange, hence they are NOT publicly traded. Shareholders of such companies are deprived of the privileges enjoyed by the shareholders of companies that are listed on stock exchanges. However, "not listed" doesn't mean that the shares cannot be traded. Shares of Unlisted Companies are traded in off-market transactions directly by the shareholders. Shares of Unlisted Companies may get listed in the future & hence there is huge growth potential in these companies. Also, even though shares are not listed ever, the shares can be traded to book profit. Globally, Private Equity companies are growing more than ever before and entrepreneurs are focusing more on building Private Equity firms, one of the leading Private Equity firms, for example, is the aerospace company SpaceX.
Nazara, Devyani, UTI, etc, were traded in the unlisted markets before listing on Stock Exchanges (NSE & BSE). CSK, Reliance Retail, Tata Technologies, etc, are companies which are currently being traded in the unlisted markets.
As of today, any Indian can invest in unlisted shares. They only need to have a Demat account and a bank account. Shares of these companies are traded via off-market transactions. Transactions are done directly via depository authentication.
